April 30th is a holiday in Japan, beginning of Golden Week, and usually warm enough for a barbecue. It started to rain a little after we got the fire started so we had to adapt; as you can see by the hastily arranged umbrella.

We had a jaw bone of a tuna which is packed with very tender bits in the cavities of the bone. The larger ones you can get in restaurants have a lot of great meat.

Recently we have been getting these large shrimp from Argentina which are good enough for sashimi or sushi, but we love them grilled. They could almost pass for “rock lobster”.

With the arrival of May we have only just begun to enjoy outdoor cooking.

I was lucky enough to, 1. Find a bar/cafe open before 5 PM in Tokyo, 2. Get a seat right in front of the mixologist where I could rest my iPhone steadily, 3. Find a guy who knows how to prep the mixing glass properly.

Bar Sapphire is a pub that specializes in Bombay Sapphire Gin cocktails, English ales and pub foods. They also have Happy Hour running from mid-day until 5 PM. I’ve never seen that done before. It’s located in Tokyo Ginza, not too far from Yurakucho JR station.

Hacci Pizza in Tateyama where quality counts!

We love this place. It just opened last year and it really is nice. From good music and a menu that offers more than just great pizza, it can’t be beat in this area. They actually know how to clean their beer server system so the beer is cold and has no nasty taste to it. This is a lost art in this area.

Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing.

Recently we visited the new, mammoth, seafood restaurant here called simply “Tateyama”. It’s located near the southern end of “the bypass” headed to Shirahama. We like it because it’s about 500 meters from our house. The lunch you see pictured was great in addition to being cheap. I couldn’t finish mine and my son had to polish it off for me. Quite a selection of seafood as you can see by the array of live fish tanks.

Folks coming to the southern Boso Peninsula should consider building an appetite on the road down and then grab a picnic table on the deck at “Tateyama”. If you like seafood, you won’t be disappointed.

For lovers of manga, tech toys, maid cafes and cutting edge computing goodies, Akihabara in Tokyo, also known as “Electric Town” is the place to stroll in awe. But wait, that’s not all…,as they have said in countless commercials since the beginning of advertising, absolutely stunning ramen, Kyushu style, can be had at “Jangara Ramen”.
